Who I Am
I am a ceramic sculptor and cartoon-portrait artist
|
Ever since I was a small boy I have enjoyed making art. As soon as I was able to hold a pencil, I drew all sorts of things – cars, airplanes, people, animals, etc. And because of my love of art, I chose to go to art school at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA. VCU is one of the best sculpture schools in our country and I got to graduate with a fine arts degree from this school. My favorite professor, Lester Van Winkle, used to say, “If you don’t know what to make, then make something; and keep making it, so that eventually, you’ll know what to make.” Classic!
Most artists support their art with a “real” job and I was no exception. Since graduating from VCU, I have gotten to be a railroad brakeman, an industrial technical illustrator, a technical art director, a systems analyst, an IT systems engineer and a manufacturing engineer/planner. But recently I decided to be a full time artist and live off of my art. It should be an interesting experience. However, if things go awry I can always return to being a contractor as a systems engineer or web developer.
